If you are interested in the Alexander Technique and enjoy learning groups, my weekly class starting on Tuesday 21st September 2021 at Prince Henry’s Grammar School in Otley may be just the thing for you. Group classes work better for some people than more traditional one to one lessons. Here are just a few reasons why:
The opportunity to learn from others
Discussing ideas in a group can help us understand concepts that on our own we might find difficult. Also, working in pairs or small groups gives us the chance to notice how others move, which can help us recognise how common some habits are. We might even recognise similar habits in ourselves!
Groups reduce the focus on individuals
Whilst some people enjoy one to one lessons where the focus is on them for the whole time, others are less comfortable with them. Group sessions work well in this instance as the focus naturally shifts between the entire group and different people within it at various times.
Groups are more affordable
Groups are more cost-effective than a series of individual lessons, which makes the Alexander Technique accessible to more people. They provide an excellent introduction to the Technique; although some people, having enjoyed a group, then choose to have one-to-one lessons.
Groups run on set days and times
Some people like the discipline of attending a class on the same day at the same time each week; it can make it easier to commit to the time.
Group learning is fun!
Groups give us the opportunity to meet people we might otherwise not have met. Break times, in particular, are great for getting to know people and possibly develop new friendships. The class at Prince Henry’s on Tuesday evening is 2 hours for ten weeks, so there will be lots of opportunities to learn, chat and laugh
